Senegal: Experts’ blind spot

It has been widely acknowledged that Senegalese women play a crucial role in national fisheries. This is a very well-known and documented feature in the Republic of Senegal. Prior to defining the requirements for a new fishing contract with the Republic of Senegal, the EU Commission appointed consultants to evaluate the opportunities for a bilateral agreement. Six authors from three renowned consulting firms, one French and two British, produced a 115-page report of recommendations. In this report, Senegalese women working in the fishing industry were only cited once and only the last of a series of 11 recommendations, ranked by order of importance, referred to women’s occupations in the industry.
